The name of the shawl, Biyani, is a word from one of the many Aboriginal languages in Australia, and means ‘women healing women’. I have decided to use this name because of the pattern’s strong Australian roots, and the fact that knitting is often a woman’s craft, and is very therapeutic.

This is an asymmetrical, triangular shawl worked side to side, and includes lace and very simple colour changes (garter stripes).

Materials/notions required:
Yarn: 3 x 100g/320m skeins One Tree Hill hand dyed fingering weight yarn in contrasting colours (1 skein each); 100% alpaca grown and processed in NSW, Australia.
C1: Pink Salt
C2: Overcast
C3: Natural Brown
Needles: 4mm (US 6), 60cm (24”) or longer circular needles (long needle is used to accommodate the large number of stitches; shawl is worked flat)
Notions: darning needle

Gauge:
18 sts and 41 rows over 4” (10cm) in garter stitch

Measurements:
Approx 178cm (70”) long, 51cm (20”) deep

Important! I am left-handed and am a mirror knitter so the deepest point of my shawl is closer to the left hand side of the finished piece. If you are right-handed and follow the written instructions exactly, your shawl’s deepest point with be closer to the right hand side of the finished piece (a mirror image of mine). Please contact me if you would like your shawl to match mine exactly – I am happy to help. Where right or left needles are specified, (i.e. in the bind off) these specifications suit right-handed knitters.
